Market Garden Collection
Nijmegen is part of the BHTV Market Garden Collection, a three part DVD series. The other episodes in the series are:
Hell's Highway
Arnhem - Battle of the Woods
For all WW2 enthusiasts we cannot recommend this DVD set highly enough. Wheather you are learning about what actually took place in Arnhem in September 1944 or you already have a good knowledge of Operation Market Garden, you will enjoy and learn from these DVD's.
This DVD covers the actual taking of two bridges that spanned two of Europes largest rivers; the Maas and the Waal at Nijmegen.
Controversy will always surround who was to blame if anyone for bad planning at Arnhem. There is a different viewpoint depending on weather you are British, American or Polish, but all agree that the Germans were very well organised in comparison to the Allied forces. What the BHTV team does here is concentrate on the military aspects using WW2 veteran input and using re-enactors to visualise what took place here in September 1944.
There were great heroics displayed by the allies at Nijmegen, none more so than the river crossing by the 3rd, 504th Parachute Infantry that British General Miles Dempsey described as he watched as "unbelievable". Without this crossing it is unlikely the Allies would have ever taken control of the bridges. But the Germans counter attacked from all sides and successfuly cut off the American supply route known as "Hells Highway" to cause the allied collapse.
There are many theories on why such a large multi nation airborne attack failed. Perhaps more credit should have been given to the battle hardened German defenders but with this DVD you can see from the comfort of your front room the landscape of the battle ground and listen to some of the most authoritive experts on the subject give an unbiased view of what happened, where and why.
A great Second World War DVD.
